About This Checklist

Debt recycling suits a particular set of circumstances. This checklist turns the signs in our guide on when not to debt recycle into questions you can answer in ten minutes.

It suits home owners weighing the strategy for the first time, and couples who want to compare answers before speaking with a broker.

Use it before your first call, then again once a buffer is built or a job change settles. Most "no" answers are timing issues, not permanent barriers.

What Is Inside

How To Use It

  1. Work out your usable equity with the sum at the top.
  2. Tick yes or no for each line. Partners answer separately.
  3. Count your "no" answers and read the guide at the bottom.
  4. Bring the sheet to your first call with a broker.

Frequently Asked Questions

One or two is not a hard no. Three or more is usually a sign to wait and work on those areas first. A no on stable income, cash buffer or usable equity carries more weight than the others, because those are what let you hold the strategy through higher rates and market falls.

No. It is general information that shows whether the common foundations are in place. Whether the strategy suits you depends on your full circumstances. A financial adviser assesses suitability, a registered tax agent confirms the tax treatment and we confirm what the lending allows.

Usable equity builds through principal repayments and, sometimes, property growth. Debt recycling is usually done in small tranches, so a modest amount can be enough to begin. Rerun the equity sum each year, or ask a broker to confirm your figure against a current valuation.
