About This Template

Debt recycling deductions rest on tracing: showing that money drawn from your investment split bought income-producing assets and nothing else. The ledger is where that trail lives, one row per transaction.

It suits any recycling structure, from a single lump-sum tranche to monthly cycles. Start it before your first draw, not at tax time. Our guide to debt recycling record-keeping lists the documents that sit behind each row.

We set up the loan structure and splits. Your registered tax agent confirms what is deductible.

What Is Inside

How To Use It

  1. Save the spreadsheet in one folder with your loan statements and contract notes.
  2. List every loan split on the Splits tab, with its account number and purpose.
  3. Add a Ledger row each time money moves: a paydown, a draw and purchase, or income received and applied.
  4. Save the matching evidence the same day and note its reference in the row.
  5. Send the ledger to your tax agent each year with your interest statements.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The ledger is a map of the trail, not the evidence itself. Keep the loan statements, transfer receipts, contract notes and income statements it points to. Your registered tax agent confirms what is deductible and which records they need for your situation.

The ATO generally asks for records to be kept for five years from the date you lodge your return, and asset records for five years after the sale or other CGT event. Because recycled assets carry a cost base, keep the ledger for the life of the strategy and beyond any sale. Confirm the period with your tax agent.

Yes. Add a row for every paydown and every draw, even small ones. Each draw is a new borrowing tested on its own purpose, so a row with a matching reference for each one keeps a monthly program as easy to follow as a single lump sum.
